Alumna named Outstanding Teacher at Southern Illinois University

Shelley Tischkau, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacology, has been selected as Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine by the SIU Academy for Scholarship in Education.

The award is given annually to recognize an SIU faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional skill and commitment to teaching.

“Tischkau’s philosophy speaks of her passion for learning and her ability as a teacher to guide and assist students in their learning,” said Nicole Roberts, Ph.D., director for the Academy for Scholarship and Education. “She represents the ideal SIU outstanding teacher in her engagement and passion for teaching as well as in her contributions to the national discussion about teaching pharmacology.”

Tischkau chaired the endocrinology sub-committee to establish National Knowledge Objectives for Medical School Pharmacology and she served as co-editor and author of “Case Files: Pharmacy.”

Tischkau joined the SIU faculty in 2007. She completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) (1999). Tischkau earned her doctoral and master’s degrees in physiology at UIUC (1995, 1991).  She earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biology at Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. (1989, 1986).
