Alumnus, Chicago-area restaurateur Billy Dec named to Obama advisory panel

Chicago restaurateur Billy Dec has been appointed to President Barack Obama's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

The federal panel is charged with trying to improve the quality of life for that demographic in health, education, environment and well-being.

Mr. Dec, whose mother immigrated from the Philippines, is CEO of Rockit Ranch Productions, a hospitality and entertainment development company that counts Rockit Bar & Grill and Sunda restaurants under its umbrella.

He recently appeared in “Chicagoland,” helping organize a fundraiser that benefited Fenger High School on the South Side.

Mr. Dec is a longtime supporter of Mr. Obama. In 2011, he hosted a fundraiser for the president during his re-election campaign. He's also involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Lookingglass Theatre Company and After School Matters. Mr. Dec has a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a law degree from the IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law.
