Jessica Paul, U of I alumnus and Luther College professor, to perform collaborative piano recital

Jessica Paul, Luther College professor of music, will perform a collaborative piano recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

The recital is open to the public with no charge for admission.

The program features Luther faculty and local musicians collaborating with Paul to perform a mix of instrumental and vocal music.

Kathryn Reed, instructor in music, harpsichord, will join Paul for Duet for Harpsichord and Piano by Asako Hirabayashi.

Paul will collaborate with Kylie Toomer, alumni guest lecturer in music, soprano, to perform "Despite & Still," a song cycle by Samuel Barber.

Heather Armstrong, associate professor of music, oboe, Jane Hawley, full professor of dance, dance artist, and Paul will perform "De Reve," a piece from Claude Debussy's song cycle, "Proses Lyriques," transcribed from its original version for voice and piano to oboe and piano, and interpreted through dance.

Carla Thelen-Hanson, adjunct faculty in music, soprano, will be accompanied by Paul for Libby Larsen's song cycle, "Try me, Good King: Last Words of the Wives of Henry VIII."

Joseph Krumholtz, violin, and Eric Kutz, cello, will take the stage with Paul for the recital's final performance, Trio No. 1 for violin, cello and piano by Lera Auerbach.

Paul holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, and Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Illinois.

She is the former principal conductor and artistic director of Dorian Opera Theatre and worked with such opera companies as the Pittsburgh Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of Illinois, National Opera Company, Cleveland Opera Theatre, Virginia Opera Association, Lake George Opera Festival, Cedar Rapids Opera and Pine Mountain Music Festival.

Paul currently serves as vocal coach, collaborative pianist and teacher of accompanying at Luther.

She is the founder and director of the popular Art Song Jamboree, an informal concert series on the Luther campus featuring art songs by female composers.
