Alumna appointed Chair of the Board, American Cancer Society California Division

University of Illinois Alumna and cancer survivor to help lead the American Cancer Society’s California Division for fiscal year 2014 and work to create a world with more birthdays.

The California Division of the American Cancer Society has appointed Lori Greenstein Bremner its Chair of the Board of Directors for 2014. Bremner will help guide objectives that assist the Society’s more than 300,000 California volunteers in creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

“The American Cancer Society has an invaluable resource and leader in Lori,” said David F. Veneziano, Executive Vice President of the American Cancer Society’s California Division. “The theme for the Board this year is ‘focus forward’ and Lori is a shining example with her passion and dedication to our mission.”

Bremner assumes her leadership role at a time when cancer incidence rates in California have decreased nearly 10% over the last 20 years. However, in 2014 an estimated 171,730 Californians will be diagnosed with cancer and approximately 159 people will die from the disease each day. Bremner will help the Society as it continues to reach cancer patients, their families, friends and caregivers with free information and free support services and programs.

Bremner has been a leading force as a volunteer with the Society in California for 16 years, starting with Relay For Life and expanding into advocacy, governance and more. She has served on and led numerous statewide and national workgroups including the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society. ACS CAN awarded Lori the State Lead Ambassador of the Year award in 2008 and she was given the 2010 Improving Quality of Life award in the Greater Bay Redwood Empire Region. In 2013, Lori received the ACS CAN Volunteer Award for Excellence in Advocacy.

Bremner is a 1975 graduate of Champaign Center High School, the University of Illinois, BA, LAS, 1980 and University of Colorado, MA, LAS, 1983. Bremner currently resides in Sonoma, California.
